Bicycles, Poo and Public Health

Congratulations to Nate Sharpe for the People Powered Poo Pump, which uses someone cycling ‘in place’ for a few minutes to transfer the waste from a pit latrine into a kind of barrel which can then be bicycled away. The article in Afrol News 6th December doesn’t say where it is transported to, but notes that it solves one of the problems of moving huge volumes of sludge about – taking it away more often in smaller quantities must surely be better for everyone in the vicinity!

Two enterprising Ugandans are using waste to make a kind of diesel to run motorbikes and even cars. It is best, apparently, when mixed with expensive ‘proper petrol’. Report from recent SciDevNet, which I have unintentionally deleted – Sorry.
