13th Congress. Association of Health Information and Libraries in Africa -2

The contributions from AHILA have been varied and numerous. These were some of the highlights for me. Rehema Chande Mallya (Tanzania) told us about the introduction of information literacy into the curriculum at Muhimbili University and the setting up of health corners in public libraries in Tanzania. Chipo Msengezi (the AHILA/Phi coordinator at ITOCA) described a survey to evaluate the introduction of an online HINARI training course, and Masimba Muziringo (Zimbabwe) gave an impassioned presentation on the necessity of continuing education for health librarians.
There were of course lots more interesting presentations in Portuguese, French and English; information literacy was dominant theme. Two open repositories were described: the Cape Verde repository for all things written by Cape Verdians and about the islands, and the newly developed WHO repository. And lively discussions between papers.
In addition there were two workshops: one on Public Access to Health Information and the other on an Information literacy course developed by a group of African Librarians along with information about the services offered by the National Library of Medicine and a description of a free system for managing references.
Altogether a great Congress. Congratulations to the AHILA Committee and to ‘Dina Brito who headed the local organization for all their hard work. Senegal Airlines was the only ‘fly in the ointment’ by changing the flights of a number of participants from East Africa so requiring a radical change to the last part of the programme.
