Open access repositories, standards and interoperability

Open access is without doubt a very pertinent issue that needs to be addressed especially for us in this part of the world [Africa]. Though this was not an issue that was discussed much at our last Congress, it  should be considered for our forthcoming activities due to its great relevance and importance. I cannot agree with Matthew Howells* more on the issue you have raised regarding interoperability. For open access repositories/databases/resources to be used issues of standardization, sharing vis-a-vis wider access are very important. These need to be addressed in depth if open access is to fulfill its objectives.

* Comment on our blog by Matthew Howells “working/managing the new Open Knowledge Repository (openknowledge.worldbank.org) at the World Bank and I’d be interested in hearing about your experience of facilitating interoperability/knowledge exchange with repositories in Africa? It is an area we are very keen to investigate.
